Deep UV-LEDs (DUV-LED) can be used in these situations.
At environment analysis
Performance of the analysis equipment is improved.
Certain substances have properties that make them capable of absorbing ultraviolet rays of a specific wavelength, and it is possible to obtain the concentration in gas by irradiating ultraviolet light and measuring the amount of light that is transmitted。 This principle is utilized in ozone analysis equipment, and also in TOC (total organic carbon), protein, SOx, NOx, chlorine, etc。, and can analyze using a similar principle。
For analysis of these items, the UV mercury lamp was conventionally used。 However, there were various restrictions regarding the size and voltage。 By using Deep UV-LEDs for this analysis equipment, miniaturization and low power consumption can be achieved。
In food manufacturing processes
It contributes upgrading and sophistication of analytical techniques for foods.
Certain substances have the characteristic of producing fluorescence, by irradiating the ultraviolet rays. As for the discovery and analysis of foreign substances in food manufacturing processes, the equipment that utilizes this characteristic is also used. Although the wavelength required for fluorescence is different depending on the physical object, it was difficult to select the wavelength with conventional UV mercury lamps because the luminescence emission spectrum was fixed.
With Deep UV-LEDs wavelengths can be selected, and they are expected to contribute to the realization of analytical techniques that were impossible with conventional light sources. Furthermore, they have multiple advantageous features in analysis for foods, such as being mercury free, not generating heat in the direction of radiation, and are compact and have a high degree of design flexibility, etc.
In hemodialysis treatment field
Achieving dialysis dose monitoring in order to contribute to appropriate treatment
A common way to check whether hemodialysis patients have been treated sufficiently is blood exam results before and after treatment.
Dialysis Dose Monitor (abbr. DDM) continuously measures the composition change of spent dialysis fluid *11by UV light absorption, and determines dialysis dose. Dialysis dose is displayed in the screen to ensure if the patient have been treated sufficiently in every each treatment.
In this optical measurement, Deep UV-LEDs have the advantages of being compact, of single wavelength, and the ability to select arbitrary wavelengths.
Similarly, applications in other analytical uses in the medical field, such as hemanalysis, etc., are also expected.

Merits of analysis using deep UV-LEDs
There are various features making it suitable for analytical use.
Deep UV-LEDs has various features which are advantageous for analysis, such as being compact,
of single wavelength, the ability to select wavelengths, ease of switching properties on and off,
directionality of light, long life, low power consumption, mercury free, etc.
By using it instead of the conventional UV mercury lamp, miniaturization and cost reductions to
analytical devices become possible. Furthermore, high expectations are placed on development of new apparatus,
which could not be achieved up to now.
